Choosing a newborn photographer is a little different from choosing someone for regular family photos. Your photographer isn’t just creating beautiful images—they’re also handling and posing your brand-new baby.

1. Newborn Safety and Experience
This is one of the biggest things I recommend parents look for.
Newborn photography often involves wrapping, soothing and posing very young babies. Ask how much experience your photographer has with newborns and whether they’ve completed newborn safety education.
A good newborn photographer should also be comfortable recognizing when a baby needs a break, needs to be fed, or simply isn’t comfortable in a particular pose.
My approach in my Leduc newborn studio is always baby-led. I’ve been photographing newborns for more than five years and have completed newborn safety training as well as First Aid and CPR training.
2. Look at Their Full Newborn Portfolio
Instagram is a great place to start, but don’t choose a photographer based on one beautiful newborn photo.
Look through their website and galleries. Do you consistently love their work?
Pay attention to posing, lighting, skin tones, editing and the overall feeling of their photographs.
Every newborn photographer has a different style. Some create very colourful and elaborate setups, while others specialize in simple, timeless images.
Choose the photographer whose work you can imagine hanging in your home years from now.
3. Understand What’s Included in the Price
Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what your session includes.
Ask whether family and sibling photographs are included, how many newborn setups you’ll receive, whether outfits and wraps are provided, and whether your package includes digital images or requires you to purchase photographs separately afterward.
Photography pricing can be confusing, so I believe in keeping my newborn packages as simple and straightforward as possible.
You should know what you’re getting before you walk through the studio door.
4. Find Out How the Photographer Handles an Unsettled Baby
Babies don’t know they’re arriving for a photoshoot!
Some newborns sleep almost the entire session. Others need extra feeding, cuddling or soothing. Neither is a problem.
An experienced newborn photographer should expect this and build enough flexibility into the session that parents don’t need to feel stressed if their baby needs some extra time.
I only ever book one session per day.
Your newborn session should never feel like your baby has to perform on a schedule.
5. Choose Someone You Feel Comfortable With
You’re going to be spending a few hours with this person during a very new and sometimes exhausting stage of parenthood.
You should feel comfortable asking questions.
Your photographer should communicate clearly before your session, explain what to expect and help you prepare without giving you a giant list of things to worry about.
The goal should be for you to arrive, settle in and know that your baby is being cared for.
6. Consider the Studio and Location
If you’re searching for newborn photography in Leduc or South Edmonton, think about how far you’ll want to travel with a brand-new baby.
Ask whether the photographer has a dedicated studio, what is provided there and whether you’ll need to bring props, wraps or other supplies.

You don’t!
Many newborn photographers reserve your due date and then finalize the actual session date after baby arrives.
Starting your search during pregnancy gives you more time to find someone whose style, experience and approach are right for your family—and gives you a better chance of getting a spot on their calendar.

There are many talented newborn photographers in the Edmonton area, and the right photographer isn’t necessarily going to be the same for every family.
